Parity 2021 | Sofia Karakatsanis I Hand Carved Console Table

£11,000.00

Artist: Sofia Karakatsanis

The Parity console (2021) is an exploration of the affinity between the beautiful and the grotesque. Inspired by Louise Bourgeois' Spider (Cell) 1997, Sofia wanted to create a piece that draws the viewer's attention, while also making them feel somewhat uncomfortable. Elegant features of the table are situated in close proximity to the more grotesque forms, creating an intriguing contrast and a strong visual presence.

Solid Ash, scorched, stained and lacquered. Custom made to order, with a 12 week lead time.

140cm x 34cm x 90cm

  • Sophia’s work exists at the intersection of striking beauty and the unsettlingly grotesque, blurring the boundaries between function and living form. Her sculptural furniture pieces possess an almost organic presence—appearing as if they could twist, crack, or shift at any moment. Through masterful craftsmanship and an unorthodox creative vision, she redefines the possibilities of woodwork, transforming raw materials into hauntingly elegant works of art.

Each piece is an exploration of tension and transformation, where the natural qualities of wood are pushed to their limits, challenging traditional notions of structure and stability. Her designs evoke a sense of unease and fascination, as if caught in a state of metamorphosis, perpetually on the verge of movement. This delicate balance between refinement and the raw, unpredictable forces of nature sets Sophia apart, allowing her to craft objects that feel both timeless and otherworldly. Her furniture does not merely exist within a space—it commands it, drawing the viewer into an experience that is as tactile as it is visual, as evocative as it is functional.
